2003 Recipients of the IHOA Sportsmanship Award

The following Associations/Clubs were recently named as the 2003 Recipients of the IHOA Sportsmanship Award.
These Associations/Clubs were selected by the On-Ice Officials for Displaying Good Sportsmanship, Integrity and Fair Play from all of their Teams, Staff and Spectators during this past season.
Chicago Hawks, Wilmette Braves, Deerfield Falcons, Fenwick Friars, St. Charles North Stars, Naperville Central Redhawks, Cary Grove Central, Buffalo Grove and Lake Forest Scouts.

LF VARSITY vs. GLENBROOK SOUTH

The Scouts were coming off a disappointing loss against Stevenson Saturday night. But, back in front of the home crowd, they were ready to go. A power play in the first period resulted in a high quality shot from the slot for Scouts' defenseman Chris Carolin. The shot got through the traffic in front of the Titans goaltender and made it to the back of the net, giving Lake Forest a 1-0 lead. The Scouts would strike again in the second period with Nick McKiernan driving from behind the net to slip the puck past the Glenbrook's goalie. Ben Riewer would seal the victory in the second half of the third period, lifting the puck over the glove of the South goalie. Scouts' goalie Doug George would complete the shutout with some amazing saves during the final minutes. He finished with 22 saves on all 22 shots on goal.

Saturday February 15th, 2003

LF VARSITY vs. STEVENSON

A critical game between the Scouts and Patriots, tied for second place in the Metro North Playoffs, had a fast tempo from the drop of the puck. Stevenson would come up empty handed in the first period thanks to the efforts of Scout goalie Doug George. It wasn't until the second that the Patriots scored a power play goal shortly followed by an even strength goal. Facing two-goal deficit at the end of the second, the Scouts needed a spark. They found it in the locker room between periods. Early chances encouraged the team, and revitalized the nearly silent crowd. The game began to turn in the favor of the Scouts in the last five minutes. The Scouts would score off a shot by Ben Riewer to pull them within one goal. Unfortunately for the Scouts, there would be no last-minute heroics, and they dropped to 2 wins and 2 losses in the Playoffs. Scout's goalie Doug George would finish with 25 saves on 27 shots in one of his better games of the year. Lake Forest faces Glenbrook South at Lake Forest College Wednesday at 7:30 pm.

Wednesday February 12th, 2003

LF VARSITY vs. NEW TRIER BLUE

In their third game of the playoffs, the Scouts again had the support of the home crowd. The New Trier goalie started the period strong despite good chances by the Scout forwards. The Trevians scored first on a high quality shot that beat goalie Doug George to the glove side. It wasn't until the second period that the Scouts tied up the game with a goal from Chris Vernon - his first of the playoffs. Doug George protected the tie with some fantastic saves. It wasn't until three minutes left in the third period that Andrew Sturges took the lead for the Scouts. Chris Ducay would score less than a minute later to give the home team the 3-1 advantage. With time running down the Trevians pulled their goalie for a sixth attacker. Again George came up big. He would finish with a win, with 22 of 23 shots stopped. Ducay would add an empty net goal from his own zone with two seconds left to ice the victory. Lake Forest will play Stevenson at Buffalo Grove Saturday before returning home next Wednesday against GBS.

Saturday February 8th, 2003

LF VARSITY vs. DEERFIELD

The Scouts came home to a sell-out crowd at the Lake Forest College rink, ready to take on the Deerfield Warriors. Doug George was perfect through the first period, and ended up with 28 saves on 29 shots. Rick Greenberg opened the scoring in the second period on a shot from the blue line that surprised the Warriors’ goalie. George would continue his perfection despite great chances by Deerfield. Senior Brad Kluever buried an opportunity in close after a wrist shot by defenseman Chris Cordell. It wasn’t until six minutes into the third that Deerfield scored. From then on the Scouts defense and George fought off the Warriors including a Deerfield 5-on-3 powerplay late in the third. The game would end in a 2-1 victory for the Scouts. They continue their home stand Wednesday the 12th versus New Trier Blue.

Wednesday February 5th, 2003

LF VARSITY vs. GLENBROOK NORTH

The Scouts’ first game of the Metro North Round Robin found them facing off against the top-ranked GBN Spartans. GBN would score with 15 seconds remaining in the opening fourteen minutes. Jared Smith would score 12 seconds later to end the period with a 1-1 tie. A barrage of shots in the second period by the Scouts failed to get by the solid GBN goalie. Doug George was very strong on the other end as well, only allowing one goal on a Spartan slap shot. The early third period was dominated by fast paced play, which the Spartans would capitalize on with two goals, expanding their lead to three. The Scouts would counter with a power play goal by Nick Mattson six minutes into the period. More pressure would result in Kyle Tropple scoring with less than a minute remaining. Even with the help of a sixth attacker GBN would hold on for a 4-3 victory. The Scouts come home to take on the Deerfield Warriors at 2:15 on Saturday.

Thursday January 30th, 2003

LF VARSITY vs. FREMD VARSITY

The visiting Vikings of Fremd scored early in the first period on a drive to the net, slipping the puck past an unaided Doug George. The Scouts bounced back with a goal by Bobby Loos. The Scouts would score again before Fremd put in their second goal of the game on the power play. The 2-2 tie was broken with a goal off a face-off from the Scouts’ Andrew Sturges. The Vikings once again tied up the game with just under seven minutes remaining. Nick McKiernan sealed the victory on a breakaway, faking out the goalie to leave a wide open net. The Scouts held on to victory despite some physical play by both teams.

Wednesday January 29th, 2003

LF VARSITY vs. GLENBROOK SOUTH VARSITY

The Scouts entered their final regular season game against the first place Glenbrook South Titans. The two teams played a hard-fought first period with the Scouts scoring on Bobby Loos’s low angle shot that trickled past the goalie on the power play. The lead was preserved through the second period. When the teams returned to the ice before the start of the third period the Scouts were ready to protect, and expand upon their lead. The Titans had a different plan, and scored their first of the game on a rebound past the outstretched stick of Doug George to tie it up. With less than five minutes to play, more pressure by South led to their second goal, taking advantage of a scrambling Lake Forest defense. The lead would stick, and the Scouts fell in their final regular season game 2-1. The teams will face-off again in the upcoming Metro North Playoffs.

CITRUS CUP – TAMPA, FL

LAKE FOREST SCOUTS – CITRUS CUP CHAMPIONS

The Scouts took advantage of a long weekend to travel down to Tampa, FL for the Citrus Cup Tournament. The Scouts will be without the veteran leadership of Board President John Brinckerhoff, and Hockey Director Randy Jordan; both will be sorely missed.

Saturday January 18th, 2003

LF VARSITY vs. OSSEO MAPLE-GROVE

Coming off two victories, the Scouts faced off against the Osseo team from Minnesota. Physical play dominated throughout the first period. Rick "T-Bird" Greenberg put a bouncing puck past the goalie to start the scoring. The Scouts allowed their first goal in the tournament late in the first to even the score at one. Kyle Tropple converted on a two-on-one after a crisp pass from Andrew Sturges. Ben Riewer would also score early in the second to give the Scouts a 3-1 lead, before Osseo scored their second of the game. John Brinckerhoff scored before the end of the period to give the Scouts a 4-2 lead entering the final twelve minutes. Greenberg would score again after a nifty goal line move. Lake Forest allowed one more goal before the final buzzer but skated off with a 5-3 victory and a number 1 ranking going into the semifinals.

LF VARSITY vs. RALEIGH STORM

The first period was scoreless, as once again Doug George was flawless between the pipes. It wasn't until the middle of the second period that Andrew Sturges scored his first goal of the tournament. Until then both teams had been playing solid defense, all the way through the end of the period. It wasn't until the third period that the Scouts sealed the victory, Jared Smith added a goal four minutes into the final period. Solid defense and the hard work of George in net carried the team through to victory.

Friday January 17th, 2003

LF VARSITY vs. ELLENTON EELS

The hometown Ellenton Eels faced off against the visiting Scouts. Chris Ducay opened the scoring, and Brad Kluever followed with a goal before the close of the opening period. Kluever struck again in the second, scoring twice in one shift, completing the hat trick. Kyle Tropple added a goal late in the period. The final frame opened with Nick Mattson threading a pass across the slot to Nick McKiernan who buried the puck in the back of the net past the outstreached Eels goalie. Doug George was stellar in net throughout. He kept the team in it early, and preserved his shutout to the very end.
