On behalf of the Lake Forest High School Hockey Association, I am pleased to announce Steve Sarauer as our new Director of Hockey and Head Varsity Coach. Steve will be joining the Scouts after coaching for both the Mission AAA Hockey organization and Lake Zurich-Mundelein-Wauconda (LZMW) High School the past six seasons. Steve’s Mission teams have been to the Tier 1 National Tournament four times, finishing in second place with the 99’ Bantam Majors, and once as a semifinalist with the 01’ Bantam Majors. LZMW has also had success during this time winning two Platinum League championships and finishing runner-up two times. Steve was named the Platinum League Varsity Coach of the Year for the 2016-2017 season. The search committee is particular impressed with the great student following Steve has worked to build for the LZMW Varsity team and look forward to tapping into his ideas and experiences to do the same for the Scouts.
Before Steve’s time at LZMW and Mission he coached in Barrington for both the Broncos High School program and the Redwings youth hockey program. Prior to coaching in Barrington, Steve coached five seasons for the Wisconsin AAA Hockey (now the Jr. Admirals) before being recruited to coach in Illinois. Steve played his youth hockey in West Bend, WI and played AAA Hockey for a season with the Pettit National Selects, and Wisconsin AAA. In 2002, Steve was invited to the Phoenix Coyotes Rookie training camp where he suffered a career ending knee injury. At this point, Steve realized his path in hockey would be through coaching and while playing at less than 100% health for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s ACHA D1 Club team, Steve made the decision to begin his coaching journey. For the past 17 years Steve has been coaching, most seasons two or three teams, and has a deep passion for the profession. The Board is pleased to welcome Steve to our club and believe he will lead our program to great success.
