Scouts Give Back

Community Service Opportunities

Scouts Hockey gives back to local community programs throughout the year as part of our strong commitment to service and volunteering. In addition to providing integral support to community organizations who need it, the below opportunities also help our players earn community service hours needed for initiatives such as National Honor Society and college applications. Below you will find various opportunities to get involved - don't forget to check back throughout the year as we will be adding more opportunities on a rolling basis.

GLASA SLED HOCKEY

GLASA Falcons Sled Hockey Program! Practices are held at Hot Shot Ice Arena on Sundays from 3:30-5:50pm. Practice times will adjust to 3-5pm in January.

Just as in ice hockey, sled hockey is played with six players (including a goalie) at a time. Sled hockey follows most of the typical ice hockey rules with the exception some of the equipment. Players propel themselves on their sledge (specially designed sleds that sit on top of two hockey skate blades) by use of spikes on the ends of two three-foot-long sticks, enabling a player to push himself as well as shoot and pass ambidextrously. Rinks and goals are regulation Olympic-size, and games consist of three 15-minute stop-time periods.

Location: Hot Shots Ice Arena (29860 Skokie Hwy, Lake Bluff, IL 60044) 3-5 pm

Southport Skating Club's Rising Stars Adaptive Skating Program

In 2017, Southport Skating Club launched a therapeutic skating program to serve children with special needs in the Chicagoland area. Weekly classes are led by skating professionals and figure skaters/hockey players who work individually with the children. The program's success continues to grow, as it breaks down barriers for special needs children to benefit from the challenges, joys and physical conditioning of figure skating. Therapeutic skating is changing the lives of these kids, and they are changing ours.

Students range from 3 - 24 yrs old. Depending on the need, the program will pair 1-3 coaches per student for each class. At first, each new Volunteer Coach will be paired with a more experienced coach or two. The comfort level of our coaches is as important as the comfort of our students, so feedback is always welcome anytime before, during, or after each class.

Fall Session is October 1 - November 19 - (8 weeks)

Classes are held at Top Shelf Ice Arena in Gurnee Mills Mall. (northwest corner of Gurnee Mills, near Entry H)
