Steve Sarauer, Hockey Director and Varsity Gold Head Coach
Steve brings to LFHC a long and successful coaching pedigree at Youth, AAA and High School levels. He enters his 9th season as LFHC’s Hockey Director and Varsity Head Coach. His Scout career began strong by winning the IHSHL Varsity & JV divisions in his inaugural 2018-2019 season. Under Steve’s leadership, the Scouts grew from 2 teams beginning in the 2018-2019 season to 4 teams today. Steve’s strategic focus on player development, accountability, integrity and increased competition paid off with Scout’s acceptance in the Scholastic Hockey League, (SHL), for the 2022-2023 season. SHL is the premier, pure high school hockey league in Illinois, producing more state champions than any other high school league. Steve has led Scouts hockey to multiple league play-off berths each season and a JV State Championship the 2024-2025 season.
Steve grew up playing his youth hockey in West Bend Wisconsin and eventually played Midget AAA hockey in Milwaukee with the Pettit National Selects and Wisconsin AAA, both of which are now the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals. After playing Midget Hockey Steve was invited in 2002 to the Phoenix Coyotes rookie camp where a knee injury took him out of camp. After recovery Steve played for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee while going to school.
He began coaching at Wisconsin AAA as well as the Pettit High School team in Milwaukee. After graduating school Steve was recruited to coach in Barrington Illinois where he became the Asst. Hockey Director of the Barrington Redwings and the Barrington Broncos High School program. Over the 4 years at Barrington High School Steve coached the JV and Asst. Coached the Varsity team. Steve's JV team won the High School State Championship 2 times and had 2 state-runner up finishes in four consecutive years.
After Barrington Steve moved on to coach at the Mission AAA program, coaching Peewee Majors, Bantam Minors, Bantam Majors and U16s. He took the Bantam 1999’s all the way to USAHockey’s National Championship, finishing as runner up. His Bantam Major 2003’s finished as a semi-finalist in USAHockey’s National Tournament.
Steve also took over as Director of the Lake Zurich High School hockey program and was able to develop a single team struggling high school program into a three-school co-op that was able to field two teams and post impressive finishes in the IHSHL each season.
At the Youth level, Steve served as Hockey Director of the oldest program in Illinois, Winter Club, for 6 seasons. Multiple CUHL, NIHL league championships and enhancements brought this program to new heights. Bringing record numbers of young skaters to the game through this storied program will continue to serve Scouts Hockey for many seasons to come.
